Statement Regarding Budget Referendum

We are encouraged that the State Legislature has reached a bipartisan budget resolution. The numbers coming out of Hartford are far more favorable for Tolland than the ‘Hope & Prayer’ that Monday’s referendum budget was drafted on. We now have real numbers to work from when considering the municipal budget we will adopt going forward.

Due to procedural requirements, the referendum vote will move forward as scheduled on Monday, October 30th.  Assuming this referendum fails, the Town Manager will present a new reality-based budget to Town Council for consideration in a special meeting on November 1st at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers, Town Hall. A new referendum vote will be scheduled for November 14th.

In light of all that has happened in the past 24 hours, we believe this to be the best course of action. A new budget could avoid additional devastating cuts to our schools and town services, and ease the burden on taxpayers.

This has been a long and confusing process. We echo Dr. Willett’s sentiment that “we are not out of the woods yet. It is a good time for all stakeholders in Tolland to get involved, and/or stay involved. Working through this together will provide the best result.”

Tolland, we can do this. Together.
